This was a 'Curates Egg' of a game, full of the good, the bad and the ugly. The basics were executed poorly at times which stifled the flow of the game, but then an explosion of pace, power and precision.
Farnborough opened the scoring with a breach of the Bracknell midfield and a slick offload, whilst Tom Hodges cover tackle was excellent the blindside was left void of green shirts - it was an easy score.
Bracknell's sloppy start continued with forwards running laterally in the midfield resulting in an intercept - Ben Stevens chased back to make the tackle. Upright guards, variable line speeds across the backline and isolated ball carriers featured heavily in Bracknell's opening quarter.
It was a number of scrappy phases which turned the tide - Danny Ramsey snapped up a loose ball, and promptly lost it in contact, Farnborough mirrored this generous act, before Callum Baker spotting the loose ball pop out of the side of the ruck, he fly hacked throw and won the race for the ball and scored the opening Bracknell try - Oli Radford converted and Bracknell led 7-5.
From here on in the 'good' slowly replaced the 'bad' allowing Bracknell to prosper.
On 26 minutes, Tom Hodge pressured the Farnborough 10 at a defensive scrum - the ball dotted down and it was deemed carried over - attacking scrum to Bracknell. A moment of indecision - shall I give or go? - from a well executed backs move butchered a 3 v 1 and a certain try.
But the composure was returning, the forwards running direct - fewer lateral lines - hammering the gain line, Harry Baker and Tom Hodge prominent, Phil Harrigan removed threats at the breakdown - 'Over and beyond' - creating quick ball. Swift hands right and another overlap created, but Ben Stevens chose to chip and chase - the decision was a good one, and he won the chase to score. Oli's conversion was best described as 'scruffy', but they all count and Bracknell turned around 14-5 up.
Early in the second half, a defensive line out was secured and Bracknell executed a scrappy exit strategy - Oli heard the call blind and wiped a beautiful pass to Callum Baker accelerating down the touchline - he hit the ball at real pace and he raced away to score. Oli converted Bracknell extended the lead to 21-5.
A moment of indecision off a defensive line out on the Bracknell line led to the ball being lost in contact and an attacking penalty for Farnborough - a quick tap and powerful drive over the line gave Farnborough some hope at 21-12 with 20 minutes to play.
The revival was short lived - The excellent Sam Spring combined with the equally impressive Dan Ramsey taking play behind enemy lines. The reverse released the destructive Josh Knight and the inevitable line break which led to a great cover tackle, but the defence was fragmented. Oli found Matt Murphy who used his fast feet and strength to drive over. The conversion was missed, Bracknell led 26-12.
From an attacking scrum the backs handled well, left then right, before Josh terrorised the Farnborough midfield once again. Callum Baker ignored a 2 v 1, and the attacked appeared to falter, but Bracknell were awarded a penalty - Ben Stevens took a quick tap diving in to the corner, the attempted tackle a tad clumsy - now the 'ugly' reared its head with a lot of handbags.
The conversion was missed.
There was a brief flurry of handbags following the restart, and a yellow card presented in Farnborough's direction. An attacking line out was cleanly taken - one of the few - and the pack charged forward low and with power - Jack Whitelaw the beneficiary. The final act being a missed conversion and Bracknell had won 36-12.
There is much to work on to avoid these weekly curates egg performances, but there was also a great deal to be pleased with too.
