Bracknell arrived at Weybridge with 14 players due to injury and forgetting to arrange lifts in time. Weybridge had 16 so we borrowed one of theirs for each half. This left both sides without subs but although competitive both sides played within the rules and injury time was kept to a minimum.
Bracknell started brightly and made ground with some good phases, but unfortunately some promising moves were ruined by poor handling and passing. This handed the initiative to Weybridge who after some sustained pressure scored an unconverted try after ten minutes. Ten minutes later Bracknell were in front against the run of play, due to an intercepted pass by Price who fed Owtram to touch down under the posts, converted by Butler.
On thirty minutes Weybridge edged in front with an unconverted try, the score remaining 10-7 until halftime.
Bracknell still being in the game, upped the energy and despite having to defend for much of the first part of the second half, there was a definite improvement in the tackles and passing, also the side was beginning to put a few phases together and gain some territory. Despite this improvement Weybridge’s determination produced a converted and unconverted tries in a ten minute spell midway through the half. Bracknell were not deterred and scored a converted try with Carter emerging from a ruck to touchdown after several phases of forward play.
Weybridge were to have the final say in the match scoring another unconverted try to complete the score 27-14
Despite this loss Bracknell can take some positives from the game, the commitment and desire to compete was there with some good tackles made especially in the second half. They battled hard to score in the last ten minutes, which was epitomised by the pick up and go which should have happened earlier in the match. A positive result could have happened if some of the handling and passes had not gone awry, especially in the first half. Kicking from hand was a big improvement and this should be worked on for further improvement. The lineouts were OK but some variety in the throw would be an improvement, they are all going to the same part of the line. Overall an encouraging performance and if the team continues in this manner a win is not far away.
