The Bracknell Colts travelled away to Beaconsfield for our first OBB Div 2 league game in 2 months, with a strong lineup in spite of COVID and injury absences. Beaconsfield had been hit by school match clashes and COVID, and we agreed to play the fixture as 12 a side.
Bracknell hit the ground running, with two tries in the first 10 minutes for Scott after some flowing interchanges and passing, both under the posts allowing Liam easy conversions to put us 0-14 in the lead. A move down the left wing resulted in a try for Liam, and another down the right was scored by Will, both under the posts, so after two more conversions by Liam we were 0-28 ahead after 20 minutes. Scott then completed his hattrick in the right corner, and Liam slotted a fantastic conversion from the right touchline to make it 0-35. Beaconsfield hit back with some strong attacks, but Bracknell broke from our own 22 and moved up the pitch for Dan to score, with Liam converting again for 0-42 - a perfect performance for 30mins. Beaconsfield actually rallied before half time and sustained pressure allowed them to score in the right corner, to go in 5-42 at half time.
Bracknell rang the changes, but still started the second half with the same intensity, and some hard forward running and multiple phases allowed Nick to score after a smart sidestep. Liam converted to go 5-49 ahead, and following the restart we immediately broke away again and passed for Liam to score and convert putting us 5-56 to the good.
Beaconsfield then had a rare foray into our half and scored in the corner for 10-56, but we stole the ball from the next restart for Dan to score and Matt B converted to extend the lead to 10-63. Beaconsfield then strung together their best phase of the match, camping in our 22 and finally scoring, and converted with a quick drop kick to move to 17-63. Bracknell attacked again, and Oski nearly scored from 30 yards with a snap drop kick attempt that narrowly missed. Beaconsfield then caught us napping with the last play of the match, doing the 22 restart as a grubber kick that they collected and set up a kick and chase to score and convert, making the final score 24-63.
A great runout today for all the squad members, which included 9 excellent tries and a perfect 9 from 9 conversions from our two kickers. Beaconsfield deserve credit for challenging very strongly in the second half, and our players had to maintain focus to the final whistle to limit their comeback.
