Bracknell U13's A and B squads shine in Berkshire Cup on finals day. A report by Paul Hayhow.

On Sunday at Maidenhead RFC were the finals of the Berkshire U13 Cup in which both BRFC U13 sides took part.

Bracknell B 34 - 33 Reading Baa Baas
Bracknell B's began the day with the Plate final against Reading Baa Baas which was a evenly contested game.

Bracknell took the initiative and selected to play with the wind behind. The early exchanges were physical, neither side prepared to concede territory or give up the ball without a fight.

Despite Bracknell taking an early lead and beginning to assert intense pressure, the opposition rallied and it was game on. Both sides upped their game which saw Bracknell's lead being clawed back by a spirited Baa Baas side.

After a period of solid defence Bracknell found the space that had eluded them and scored the final try to end up worthy winners 34-33.

Without question this was the B teams best performance and the coaches were delighted to see the hard work at training paid off.

Bracknell 24 - 5 Newbury
On the back of a good run of performances Bracknell's confidence was high. Both sides began at an electric pace.

Bracknell's ability to score early points and then see off the opposition was tested. Their opponents were worthy of their final place as they relentlessly attacked the Bracknell line.

An excellent passage of play saw the Newbury centre break through the Bracknell line and run in for the first score.....except Bracknell's fly half showed why you never give up the chase and managed to catch his man over the try line and held him up.

This was the turning point. Bracknell's forwards went hunting for the ball with increased aggression, rucking, sniping at the rucks to win turnover ball. The backs settled and began to show why previous oppositions have struggled to stay with our pace and defence.

At half time the score line of 14-5 was flattering to Bracknell - the second half was always going to be a thriller.

Bracknell proved to want the game more exerting more pressure on every Newbury attack, stopping them in their stride and punishing them with territory gains in our favour.

The final whistle went and Bracknell knew they had been in a hard physical game which meant the win was even more important.

The final score of 24-5 does not reflect the closeness of the game. Newbury were a good side who I am sure will be a team who will bounce back and be a constant threat through junior rugby.

The feedback from the Berkshire executive and opposition coaches was very positive and both teams should be very proud of the standards that they have reached.

Well done to all players, coaches and parents.

Go BRFC!
