Going into the game, it was clear that Bracknell were managing several injuries in key positions and would likely need to adapt throughout the match. With late call ups, it was evident from the outset that the starting XV would probably look quite different from the side that finished the game.
The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with Reading holding a noticeable size advantage in the pack, probably around a stone per player. Bracknell responded superbly, combining the hard work of the forwards with outstanding defensive efforts from Finn P and George N. Time and again they stopped Reading's bigger runners on the gain line, preventing them from building any momentum. From a coaching perspective, these tackles were crucial and played a significant role in setting the tone for the first half.
A closely fought opening period ended with Bracknell leading 7-0. Freddy Brown ignited the attack by switching play from one side of the pitch to the other before stepping his way over in the corner. He then added an excellent conversion from the touchline. In truth, Bracknell could have gone into the break with an even greater advantage given the opportunities they created.
The second half saw Bracknell take control. Tries from Braxton, Riley and George W were complemented by a hat-trick from Tawan as the team raised the tempo and intensity. It was particularly pleasing to see the impact made by the substitutes, with the squad maintaining its standard throughout the match. Bailey and Kaiden's intelligent kicking game helped create opportunities, while Finn B played an important role in moving the ball wide and allowing the team to play to its strengths. Max S also deserves special mention for a strong performance at prop in his first game in that position.
Charlie bagged MOTM for great display at fullback...and a conversion!
As coaches, it was a hard game to manage with a lot of subs and the opposition causing issues with their rolling subs and injuries.
That aside, as coaches we have challenged the boys hard to think more about the overall game, their contribution to the team, and how they can stay present regardless of position. Today they embraced that challenge and it showed. The squad played with maturity, selflessness and excellent club spirit throughout.
A fantastic performance and a thoroughly deserved result. Well done to all the boys.
Onwards and upwards as we look forward to the next round where the boys will face Windsor for a place in the final!
