Report by Ian Manners

Sunday January 20th and Bracknell Hurricanes made the one hour drive for a friendly match with Horsham who play in the Sussex leagues.
After a very intense warm up Bracknell took to the field on a dry but very cold day. The pitch was in excellent condition and the coaches were looking to build on the work done in training the previous Wednesday.
Within minutes of the start Bracknell found themselves defending their line but from a 5 metre scrum and quick ball the backs moved the ball along the line to outside centre Ben Burton who ran on an outside arc to outpace the Horsham defence and score a scintillating try, 5-0 up after 4 minutes!
Horsham bounced back and ran the ball wide to their big fast winger who shrugged off three poor tackles to score.
The teams were well matched and Horsham’s big inside centre began to cause problems but the Bracknell defence held firm and he was stopped on several occasions by some great tackling by Seb Corley and Sam Georgesum in the forwards so the half finished 5-5.
Soon after the start of the second half Horsham created an overlap to the left and ran in a very good try. Ten minutes later lock Will Evans off loaded out of a tackle to his partner Will Taverner on the right touch line and Taverner ran in to score from 30 metres out.
The game continued to flow backwards and forwards but 3 minutes later, this time on the left, Will Taverner picked up a loose ball from the back of a ruck and ran in unopposed from 20 metres out, 15-10 to Bracknell.
On 22 minutes the Hurricanes had another scrum on the right of the pitch. Geoffrey Manners at fly half called a move. Ben Burton moved to inside centre with Zach Pugh moving to the outside centre channel. Bracknell won quick ball and Geoffrey threw a long miss pass to Zach. Zach drew his opposite number and passed to Ben who had looped him at pace creating an overlap. Ben drew the Horsham winger giving a short pass to James Waller on his outside who ran in from 25 metres unopposed. Quick ball, precision passing, slick hands, loop, overlap, TRY! It was the try of the season so far and was especially good because the boys had adapted some moves from training and had called the move themselves which was very pleasing for the coaches.
The game continued with more attractive rugby and good tackling from both teams but there were no further scores, so Bracknell finished winners at 20-10.
Bracknell’s Man of The Match was Jenson Harpin who had his best game to date with some crunching tackles and a high work rate.
