The first game for more than a year that had been played at the Club saw us welcome the Abingdon side who had prevailed by two tries to one at the recent Reading festival.
Because of half term, both teams were down to very slim numbers with several Bracknell boys missing through injury also, so it was good to see some of them (Theo and Seth) roll up to support their team mates.
As it turned out, they were joined on the sidelines by various other players throughout the game, leaving the team, at one point down to 14 players, and generally quite threadbare. It is then, with great thanks that the likes of Josh Eyre, Sam, Alex and Daniel all stepped up to play, at various points out of the more usual positions.
Abingdon played well, as they ran with good intent and tackled particularly well, when Bracknell did threaten – and despite the scoreline, Bracknell did threaten on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to “click” for the boys and whilst all can look back at individual elements that they did very well, most will look at areas for improvement, or more attention as well.
As oit happens, Abingdon raced into a three try lead quite quickly, before the Bracknell boys cane back into the game at made a contest of it for the second quarter – 19-0 at half time. They then added another right after half time whereby Bracknell again roused themselves and probably had the better of the next 15 mins or so, spurning a couple of good chances to score and being held up once over the line (Oakley we believe), before two long distance tries sealed the game for Abingdon, the last all the way from their own try line when Bracknell turned over the ball.
One of those days, and everyone know who much better the team will be next week.
Our thanks go to Abingdon who committed to travel down from Oxfordshire not knowing how many players they would manage to turn up with. Enough, as it turned out.
