Bracknell didn't get off to a great start on a wonderful day for rugby. The majority of the team turning up and getting onto the park 10 minutes before kick off, which even by the standards of the Fourths “Just in Time” warm ups, was leaving it a bit late. Captain Derby had, however, started off well by not only bringing kit but bringing the right kit.
Once the introductions were done (which is becoming standard procedure at the start of every 4's game) Chinnor kicked off. Bracknell took a long time to get into the game and Chinnor ran in a couple of early tries from very poor defensive lines.
Once Bracknell got the front row positions sorted we started to get the upper hand in the scrum (despite being without Matt 'the colt' Randall in the engine room) only to have Glynn Mosses and Wayno pick up injuries and have to leave the game after 20 minutes.
A few positional changes and some youth coming into the side with Ben Thomas coming on in the back row and Bracknell started to get into their stride.
A wonderful individual effort by Nick O'Donavon, sidestepping and spinning and handing off what seemed to be the whole of the Chinnor side to touch down for Bracknell's first points.
The second half was all about Bracknell, Dave Rossi, Johan, Ade Lovejoy, David Gaynor all touching down. A few wayward conversions meant we were along way from catching up, but a very impressive second half (not helped by the rather lack lustre captaincy from Paul 'welshie' Darby, mostly due to the fact he was constantly trying to figure out how to keep Tonks on the park because of the distinct whinge he was receiving whenever he was given a brief rest on the sideline).
Good performances by Dave Goad, cutting some delightful lines in the centres, Ben Thomas making tackles at every inch on the pitch, Dave Gaynor coming on to give the number 9 position a fresh burst of youthful enthusiasm and some inch perfect passing, Roger Houghton for returning to the team after a long sabbatical and lasting a good 50minutes. And not to forget Duncan James-Milnes who came on for the last 10-15 minutes to bring the average age of the team up a few years.
A disappointing scoreline against a very young looking Chinnor "vets" team but certainly not a disappointing performance once Bracknell started to play (and when all the players turned up, Andy 'poor commitment' Croy turning up on what seemed like Sunday).
Special mention to the post match food, or lack of it. Delicious as it was, the half a fistful of pasta carbonari was not really suitable: presumably the rest was being saved for the club function later that evening…or the chef had picked up his mini-cookbook by mistake. Cunningly, we stocked up on the free potatos-in-stuff instead. Last laugh to the Fours!
