The last weekend of October, day before the clocks go back for winter and the Mighty Threes are treated to only their 2nd home game of the season.
The warm up was disrupted by pitch movements, first being allocated to play at Calfridus, only for the ref to deem the pitch unsafe due to exposed metal work. Therefore the teams trudged back to pitch 2 to resume the warm up kicking off approximately 15 minutes late with a good crowd gathering once they had all figured out where we were actually playing.
Following on from last weeks strong performance at Windsor the threes again started well playing down the hill and camping in the Henley half of the pitch for most of the early part of the game. However, despite this pressure Bracknell failed to score early on and were made to work for the first try of the game.
The set piece was again strong providing good first phase ball and the backs continued to make in roads through the defence. The scores would have appeared sooner but the home team made some early mistakes at the breakdown and too often conceded possession after working into good scoring positions.
The first ten minutes also had a few injury scares with a whole host of players down needing attention. Thankfully only 1 serious injury occurred with wing Adam Francis needing to leave the field bringing on Lee Woods to prevent any further sideline sulking from actually being picked on the bench to start with!!
Bracknell increased the lead in the first half looking comfortable at half time. The second half kicked off with the home side determined to improve the commitment at the breakdown area and this paid off with more possession becoming secured as the game went on with the score also increase through additional tries and penalty kicks.
The confidence through the team was growing for all to see with some of the Threes trademark handling passages of play getting appreciation from the side lines. After stretching Henley left and right it seemed that everyone had touched the ball and a try was certain in the top corner when the final pass inside to prop Dan Ledger was shockingly dropped just short of the line.
The relief for the visitors was short lived though as Bracknell managed to work the turn over in the scrum and after the scrum collapsing as Bracknell drove for the line the ball was able to make it out to the backs for a score under the posts.
Bonus point win secured and the opposition scorecard kept to nil made for a very happy captain and for a well earned few beers into the evening!!
