After a weeks break the Mighty Threes returned to league action with an away trip to Windsor eager to continue the recent run of good form. A few last minute changes to the team were needed following some late injuries led to a re-jigged back line, but nevertheless the team arrived in good form looking to hit the ground running. Despite the differences in league positions Bracknell were aware that this game would be likely to provide a tough test with coach Baz Francis and captain Rob Munro asking everyone to put maximum effort in.
The game got underway and Bracknell did exactly this pressuring the home team from the off at both set piece and in the contact area. Bracknell were awarded with an early try to the shock of the home team. The conversion was missed (becoming a regular feature for the afternoon). Following this score Windsor rallied and after conceding penalties Bracknell found themselves defending their own line. The 3s were then to loose No 8 Dave Rosi for his customary 10 minute rest, sent to the sin bin for infringing close to the try line. The rumours of internet betting again disrupting rugby’s good name!! Despite being 1 man down Bracknell worked hard to keep out the home side eventually running out of defenders. The missed conversion left the scores at 5 all.
The forwards picked up the work rate to compensate being a man down and with the scrum and line out still functioning well (despite jumper Mike Round giving away about 2 feet in height to the Windsor jumpers) the Mighty 3s were able to take the attack again. Centre Nick O’Donovan broke straight through the defence with the forwards rushing through in support some great handling right across the time gave Bracknell an excellent score to re-take the lead still a man down. Once numbers were restored Bracknell continued to apply the pressure and were able to repel anything the home side threw. Giving a penalty against the home side close to their own line the referee showed good consistency in also issuing a yellow card giving Bracknell a ten minute 1 man advantage. With half time looming the visitors opted for the scrum and turned the screw driving over the line for their third try and to open their lead. True to the form book the conversion was missed giving a half time lead of 5-15.
The second half got underway with the team unchanged and Bracknell were soon to put the pressure on again with the bonus point try taken early on. With a couple of changes needed in the backs due to injuries Bracknell to their foot off the gas taking their time to re-organise, however, they were still able to prevent the home team getting back into the game. After finding their feet after the changes a fifth try was added sealing the game. A final penalty was added to the overall scoreline with the kick actually going over to the cheers of players on both sides. The game finished 5-28 a comfortable bonus point away win for the mighty 3s to keep their winning run going!!
Notable mentions in this weeks dispatches include Chris Griffiths for stepping in on the wing and playing a blinder putting in some great tackles and winning turn over ball, centre Nick O’Donovan and back row Johan for some bulldozing rungs through the defence.
