At this stage of the season it is fair to say that Bracknell’s biggest shock of the season was losing 45 - 26 to Newton Abbot at Rackerhayes. This is the most points that BRFC has conceded in any game this season, including games against champions Lydney! With this in mind Rory and the team knew they were in for a hard game.
With over 100 people at the pre match lunch the mood was celebratory – we even managed to get the BRFC wine cellar key off Wardy. So at 3pm the members, guests and visitors that enjoyed the pre- lunch joined the supporters for the final home 1XV game of the season.
As this game was possibly Ben Nowak's last 1XV home starting game, after 18 years as a regular 1XV player, it was quite fitting that Ben Nowak led out the Bracknell team through the amassed ranks of the U11, U12 plus 3XV honour guard.
Whatever Ben was thinking it did not affect his kicking as he put Bracknell ahead with penalty after 6 minutes following Newton Abbots winger, Nic Holt, sin binning.
Bracknell’s first try of the afternoon came from a Stuart Mackay burst down left wing and an offload to Ben Yates who went on to beat one man to score. An excellent conversion from Ben Nowak made the score 10-0.
15 minutes gone, Newton Abbot finally got on the scoreboard with a penalty from full back Stephen Ward
The killer blow of the half came from two tries in two minutes both scored by Ben Yates after some great link up play from the Bracknell ‘back three’ Ian Burch and Stuart Mackay . This meant the Bracknell lead increased to 19 points, 22-3.
A converted try from Newton Abbot prop Lloyd Radford cut Bracknell's lead to 22-10 but with last move of the half a Stuart Mackay try secured the bonus point. Ben Nowak converted meaning it was Bracknell 29 Newton Abbot 10 at half time.
Bracknell struggled to get into top gear in the second half, this was not helped losing Nico Maybury to the sin bin with 20 minutes gone into the half. It was not until the final ten minutes that two further try’s from Stuart Mackay made the final score 41-10, and the large crowd could show their appreciation with by loudly clapping the players off.
We must hope that this win means that Newton Abbot want to seek revenge on a Berkshire team as they play our rivals in the promotion play off spot, Redingensians, and a win for Newton Abbot would not do us any harm.
Bracknell in the meantime must focus on the final two away games starting with a tough game away at Old Reds next Saturday, who we met on the opening game of the season.
Please come down and support the team! GO BRFC!
