Brixham 25 Bracknell 10

Bracknell set sail down the M5 for the second time in a week, this time their designation was Astley Park home of Brixham RFC (aka The Fisherman). So far this season The Fisherman have enjoyed home wins over Old Pats and local Devon rival Newton Abbot to leave them in ninth place with eleven league points. Their only one home defeat this season being a 19-28 loss to Barnstaple. Bracknell had still to record a win away this season. Last season’s corresponding fixture Bracknell lost 47-31, Bracknell securing a bonus point with three second half try’s after being down 33-5 at half time.

Once again Daniel ap Dafydd was forced into changing his starting line up, captain Michael Clarke unable to make the trip due to a shoulder injury and back rower Giuseppe Salustri out with concussion.

Bracknell enjoyed the opening minutes but it would be the Fisherman that would open the scoring centre Harrison Culley scoring under the Bracknell posts with quarter of an hour gone.

Bracknell’s response was immediate, from the restart a break by Cam MacDonald, some deft hands in the backs saw Gabe Hills score under the posts. Conversion from Vic Hardwicke was good.

With ten minutes of the half remaining the Fisherman pressure told as full back Connor Bedwell scored the Fisherman's second try of the afternoon. Conversion from Mitch Pinkus was successful.

As the Fisherman piled on the pressure Rhys Verley was caught on the wrong side of the ruck and received a yellow card. From the resultant penalty Mitch Pinkus extended the Fisherman's lead.

There was still time in the half for Vic Hardwicke to close the gap with a penalty.

Half time: Brixham 17 Bracknell 10

Bracknell started the half the livelier of the sides. Ten minutes into the half came game changing moment. Bracknell failed to cleanly collect the ball for what would have been a try scoring opportunity. In a melee of players, Jason Henry was deemed to have struck an opponent by referee Kevin Williams and received a red card. Bracknell would have to play the rest of the game one man down.

The Fisherman were unable to take advantage of their man overlap until the final ten minutes when the win was confirmed with a try from hooker Chey Bryce coming off a driving maul.

Full time: Brixham 25 Bracknell 10 (Points: Brixham 4 Bracknell 0)

Daniel ap Dafydd said after the match “Really pleased with the shift that the players put in today “ The result however does see Bracknell drop further into the relegation zone and are now just one place off the bottom run having gone 4 games without a win.

Bracknell now have a Saturday off to re-group before they are next in action at home to Camborne on 20th October (KO 3pm). The same day there is a Former Players Pre Match Lunch. For details and booking click here.

Reminder to all that next Friday at the club it’s the #OneClub social evening (starting 7pm) featuring drinks promotions and live music performed by Charlie Luffrum.

Finally congrats to the Stags who continued their good league form with an away win at Witney.
