Junior Cup - Seaford Ladies Vs Bracknell Ladies 20/01/2019

On the 20th January the time had come for the girls to travel to Seaford to secure their spot in the Junior Cup Quarter Final. With over 50 teams starting in this Cup the girls are already proud of how far they have come but they wanted to see if they can push themselves further.

The whistle went and Seaford sent a low rumbling kick to Bracknell Ladies. The ball was knocked on and the first scrum of the match was in the oppositions favour. The next 20 minutes were a true test of grit and determination for both teams as Bracknell worked hard to stop Seaford getting over the try line. Despite great defence from both the forwards and backs Seaford managed to power through over the whitewash 20 minutes after kick off.

Bracknell knew that they needed to go back at Seaford with a fire in their belly to be able to move forward. Great strong carries from the forwards and set plays from the backs allowed Bracknell to move up the pitch. Soon a penalty came in Bracknell’s favour. With this being a cup match and the ladies fighting for a place in the quarter finals level headed Captain Hannah Taylor gets Mia McCreesh to step up to kick for the posts. Sadly the kick didn’t quite get the girls the points on the board they were hoping for, but it was a great opportunity for the girls to think about how they want this game to go.

The ball was quickly in Bracknell’s hands again and a great forward break allowed space to be created before the ball ended with Joy Westlake for the first Bracknell try of the match.

Half time score is a nail biting 5-5.

A high ball from the half time whistle caused Seaford to knock the ball on allowing a scrum in their favour. This was a great opportunity for Megan RL and Leanne Smith to work together and carry the ball strongly towards the Seaford back line with Rachel Rickett and Kirsty Robson in support.

The game wasn’t ever going to be easy and Seaford were quick to react to Bracknell’s mistakes. Thanks to great tackles from the Bracknell girls Seaford were unable to make much movement up the pitch, massive hits came from Kirsty, Mia & Joy in the back line throughout the match.

A quick ball from the ruck to the hands of Shiv Jamieson allowed her to power through handing off Seaford before offloading to Esmee Sturges, the recently converted forward that used her fast feet and strong carrying to move further towards the try line. Alice Whitbread was quick to get to the ruck and saw a space for her to pick round the ruck and again make great yards. The ball soon found the hands of Joy Westlake to touch the ball over the whitewash for her second try of the match. Mia took the conversion which put another 2 points on the board making the score

The final try of the game came from great passes and quick thinking Amber Clark and Caz Kirk who both had pressure on them from Seaford yet still managed to get the ball out to the wing allowing Joy to get her third try of the match.

Final score Bracknell 17-5 Seaford.

A few words from our captain, Hannah Taylor; “The whistle blew to kick off and I could tell within the first few minutes that the whole team were geared for the win. Our defence was strong and we didn’t let up. In attack we used hard hits and quick hands to move the ball wide. It’s an amazing feeling to make it through to the quarter finals of the junior cup. I am one proud captain. Well done”
