Under 14s Cup Final Thriller

Under 14s Cup Final Thriller

Matt Bond9 Feb - 09:27

Bracknell RFC Under 14s faced Maidenhead RFC "A" in the final of the Berkshire Youth Cup in what turned out to be one of the matches of the season

Bracknell Under 14s were out for revenge for an early season defeat they suffered against Maidenhead RFC "A" and it showed, in what was an enthrawling and end-to-end fixture, as both side battled for the trophy.

Maidenhead started the better of the two squads. Stringing together the phases, they looked to make gaps in the Bracknell defence. With the hits being put in by George W, George M and Finn P, the green wall stayed firm. A fault at the lineout let Miadenhead grab a quick turnover in the 22, and their quick reactions saw them dive through to opening the scoring early on. Bracknell responded quickly. The ball worked along the line at pace and into the hands of James who flew past his opposite man to dot down and level the scores. Maidenhead responded and put ghuge pressure onto the Bracknell lads. Using their backs to good effect, they squeezed through on the fringes and scored their second try. Play was frantic, with each side battling to gain control of a very even fixture. Will was doing Will things, colliding into every player and sending them flying, Braxton getting on the front foot whenever he could and Fred B keeping Maidenhead guessing with every subtle variation in attack. It worked, as Charlie got on the end of some loose play and put on the afterburners to round the Maidenhead full back and dot down under the posts. Fred B adding the extras to leave the scores equal at 12-12 into halftime.

The second half saw just as much intensity from both sides. Excellent distirbution from the base from Kaiden kept the tempo high and it paid divedends. Quick service form the base put James into a Maidenhead defensive hole and the speedster needed no extra motivation, as he sped in for his scond score of the day. Extras added by Fred B and Bracknell lead for the first time at 12-19. A swift repsonse from Maidenhead two minutes later, from a quickly taken tap penalty that stretched the Bracknell defence, was scored and converted, levelling the scores once more. The support form the touchlines was defeaning, as fmailies and friends cheered on two great sides. Maidenhead seemed inspired, and took advantage again of some poor Bracknell discipline. Kicking to touch form a penalty, the following play barrelled up the centre and ended in Maidenhead retaking the lead with their fourth try. 26-19 and work to do for Bracknell. No more backwards steps, and Bracknell dominated the next passages of play. Geroge W unlucky not to dot over from a great pick and go, but the resulting penalty he earned was taken by Braxton and smahed through three defenders to score out on the left touchline. Fred B stepped up and fired an absolute missile of a conversion to level the scores once mroe. A huge cheer from everyone echoed across the park. Bracknell gathered the restart and forced their way up field. A penalty at the breakdown and yellow card for Bracknell eased the pressure on Miadenhad, but the never sya die attitude of the lads in green shone through. A great jackal and turnover put Bracknell back into the Maidenhead 22 and on the attack. A deliberate offisde missed by the ref, who deemed a knock on to have occurred, and the whistle was blown ending the fixture at 26-26.

Due to tournament rules, there was no extra time and as Maidenhead had scored first, they were awarded the win and the trophy.

Heartbreak at the end for Bracknell, but jubilation in such a wonderful performance. Having been outclassed earlier in the year by Maidenhead, this match showed the development and turnaround in the Bracknell squad. Stonewall defence, flair in attack and a will to win, shone through. A proud moment for everyone involved with the squad and a real good outlook going forward.

Despite no trophy coming back to Lilly Hill Park this season, the boys did the club proud , with ane exceptional performance, that defines a great season.
