Under 14 Development Side Second Best in Berkshire Youth Cup Final

Matt Bond9 Feb - 09:00

Bracknell RFC Under 14 Development Squad were bested by a clinical Windsor RFC "B" in the final of the Berkshire Youth Cup

Bracknell Under 14 Development took to the field in an excited and aminitious mood, knowing they had bested WIndsor RFC "B" just two weeks previous. This excitement and ambition showed as Bracknell started brightly, putting the ball through the hands and looking to work the Windsor defence with some probing attacks.

The game was balanced evenly, with a much improved Windsor defence pressing up quickly, which lead to a handling error from Bracknell. WIndsor exploited the turnover, forcing a peanlty that was kicked to the corner. The move from the lineout found a weak shoulder and eleven minutes in Windsor lead. The troops were roused by captain Finn B and Bracknell were back at it, but couldnt get out of their own half. Max S smashed it up through the middle, while TAwen and Oli T looked to use pace out wide, but it just didnt click. Another penalty was taken quick and Windsor sprinted down the wing. A great cover tackle by TK was deemed high, and depsite the presence of other defenders, a penalty try was awarded.

Half time saw Bracknell facing a 12-0 deficit and the prospect of a fightback.

The sceond half started well. The back row of Harry MD, Isaac and Rowan tackling their hearts out and battling at every breakdown, ensured Bracknell retained possesion through the phases. Four minutes into the half, Zabi showed some elegeant footwork, stepped two defenders before offloading to a charging Tawen, who barged over in the corner. Bracknell lifted, it was now a one score game.

The scrum began to dominate, with Benn, Cam and Oscar powering the WIndsor pack backwards on more than one occassion. Replacements Kieren and George R added extra oomph and Bracknell seemed to get some control. In the middle Alfie distrubuted the ball well to Max S who took on every defender he could and made great forward progress. Greg and Oli R in the second row ensured no Windsor attack got thorugh easily too. A quick break from Finn saw great ground gained, and he was unlucky not to get the offload away to supporting players. Zabi looked to control the match for Bracknell, by gaining territor with some well placed kicks and Hayden and Oli H came onto the field and made sure the width of play was used well.

A number of penalties began to creep into the game against Bracknell and the game began to slip away. Two tries from Windsor in quick succession put them out of touch. Despite Bracknells undying best efforts, it wasn't to be. The whistle was blown with Windsor taking a 24-5 victory and the silverware.

Dissapointment for Bracknell, but only on the day. The work the development squad has done and the improvement over the year has been immense. The work rate, determination, technical ability and commmardaery and teamwork is significantly improved form the start of the year. The players can hold their heads high, knowing the coaching and management team, fmailies and supproters are incredibly proud of each and every one of them.

Mentions from this match go to Max S for a superb match. A triple tackle, multiple turnovers and some rampaging runs. Isaac for his huge hits in defence, jackaling at every oppurtunity and getting stuck into every contact zone he could find. Harry MD for playing a game far in excess of his diminutive staure, making sure the WIndosr forwards had a hard day at the office. Rowan for never taking a backwards step and being solid across the field. And finally, Tawen for taking his oppurtunity to score in the corner.
