Weston-Night-Mare by special correspondents Colin Davies-Watt & Andy Wilson

The last time Bracknell and Weston met, the sides produced a try fest where Bracknell claimed the spoils – this time it was Weston that claimed the unexpected victory.

On a cold and overcast day Bracknell opened their account with a well worked try from Mr Stuart MacKay within the first five minutes. The conversion was narrowly missed by George Owen.

Bracknell continued to exploit their early pressure with a try from Irishman Barry Dwyer (who would later that day have even better things to cheer!) returning to the 1XV after a spell out with injury. The conversion was once again narrowly missed by George Owen.

This would be the zenith of the first forty minutes for Bracknell as Weston where to dominate the remainder of the half. Two converted trys from centre Ollie Snook and a penalty from the vistors, left Bracknell trailing 10-17 at half time.

The flames of a Bracknell comeback where lit by an Ian Burch try early in the second half; – however with the kicking duties taken over by Ben Nowak the result was still the same with the conversion narrowly missing the uprights.

The flickering flames of a Bracknell comeback were quickly extinguished by a rampant Weston pack, whose dominance allowed pack members Mick Hocking and George Sparks to cross the white wash to extend Weston’s lead further.

With Weston down to fourteen men Bracknell bounced back from the ropes with another try from Barry Dwyer which at least secured Bracknell a losing bonus point. The faint hopes of come back were killed off with a further Weston try from Rick Webster.

Bracknell made the score respectable with a score from George Owen deep into injury time.

Bracknell paid the price for too many missed tackles on the day playing against a determined Weston side, who were and are still fighting against relegation. – Good luck to them.
