It felt as if spring had sprung on this sunny Saturday afternoon, and certainly the good conditions and VP lunch had attracted a good crowd.
Lachy Valentine led out the Bracknell team playing in his last home fixture for the club. Bracknell kicked off playing away from the clubhouse. Straight from the kick off Bracknell were awarded a penalty, which Chris Laider dispatched for a three nil lead.
A further Chris Laidler penalty extended Bracknell’s lead, before a Sam Taylor try for Hornets gave them the lead. The open-side capitalising on some sustained Hornets pressure in the Bracknell half to break the Bracknell defensive line. Winger Oscar James converted. A Hornets penalty from Oscar James took the score line to 6-10 at half time.
What ever was said in the changing room at half time had an effect on Bracknell as they came out looking a different team.
5 minutes gone into the second half, a catch and drive from a line out in the Hornets 22 resulted in a James Ingle score. The conversion just going wide. Five minutes later following a series of rucks in the Hornets 22 Lachy Valentine was able crash over the try line. Conversion was missed. 16-10.
Hornets kept their hopes alive with a further Oscar James penalty, Bracknell having been deemed offside at a ruck.
Bracknell now enjoying the possession and territory. Hornets, having previously been cautioned by the referee, had a player sent to the sin bin for collapsing the maul. From the resultant penalty Chris Laidler extended the Bracknell lead. A further Chris Laidler penalty took the scoreline to 22-13.
With just over 5 minutes remaining and with Hornets having to chase the game, a pass was intercepted by Peceli Nacamavuto who had the presence of mind to dot the ball down under the Hornets post. Chris Laidler kicked the conversion.
