A tough game and a tough result

Bracknell made the short trip to Maidenhead for the first return fixture of the season having narrowly lost at home earlier in the season despite the score-line.

Bracknell kicked off at 2pm on a dry dull day with a slightly cool breeze. The first score came after eight minutes, Bracknell had a penalty but it was well kept in by the Maidenhead winger who kicked it to the Bracknell 22, there was a scrum and four phases later the home sides 13 ran in to score 5-0 as the try was unconverted.

Bracknell got back into the game and spent many minutes in the Maidenhead half and 22, it wasn't until the 17th minute Bracknell levelled the scores, the backs secured the ball and got the ball out to the wing, a rolling maul was formed and the try was scored, this was not converted score now 5-5.

On 22 minutes Bracknell had defended well to keep the home-side out, but they had a scrum on 5 metres which Bracknell won against the put-in but bizarrely Maidenhead scored, was the ball out of the scrum? The score was out wide and the conversion missed, 10-5.

Bracknell had some good possession at this point but a turnover enabled the home side to score again after 35 minutes, a line-out was gathered by the Maids backs and following a good run by the home full back the score was now 17-5 with the conversion successful.

Half -time 17-5

Maidenhead kicked off the second half but it was not until 16 Fifteenminutes of the half before the scoreboard moved again. A Bracknell penalty did not make touch but secured the ball and eight phases later a turnover in favour of the home-side after a scrum from a forward pass, then a line-out Maidenhead scored their own push-over try which was converted to take the score to 24-5.

Fifteen minutes later was the final score of the match, it seemed like the home side could absorb pressure then accelerate to score and this was a good example of that. Bracknell had a penalty whuich was kicked for a line-out, the ball was secured but a Maids turnover and a kick to their 22 ended with a penalty to the home side. The ball was taken by the Maidenhead no eleven to score, this was converted to make the score 31-5 with ten minutes left.

Bracknell retained the ball for much of this time but could not penetrate the home defence, and a turnover after many phases was kicked to touch and the final whistle was blown.

Final score Maidenhead 31 (5 points) Bracknell 5 (0 points)
