1XV miss out on the South Coast

Bournemouth (20) 23 Bracknell (5) 17
By Gary Miles

Bracknell kicked off right to left in front of the stand, the kick just went 10 metres due to the wind across the pitch. After a series of kicks and Bracknell turnover and three phases, Bournemouth were awarded a penalty, but the kick was just wide, the score remained 0-0 after 3 minutes.

Another 3 minutes though, Bournemouth opened the scoring, Bracknell had again created a turnover but a forward led to a home scrum, Bracknell had a good push on but a Bournemouth take and a kick to the 5 metre line led to a pushover try, unconverted 5-0.

Bracknell hit back with their first foray into the Bournemouth half , the kick-off went to twelve metres of the try line and resulted in a line-out followed by a maul and drive to score, it was now 5-5 as the conversion just missed due to the wind.

Bracknell and Bournemouth traded play for the next few minutes mainly in the Bracknell half. Eventually a wind assisted penalty kick was scored, 8-5.

Twenty-two minutes and another penalty hit the post from long range. Bournemouth increased their lead with a backs inspired converted try on the half hour to make the score to 15-5.

The final score of the half came after 35 minutes, following an exchange of kicks, Bournemouth ran the ball to half-way following alternating turnovers the home side won a penalty, from the ensuing line-out, two-phases of mauls Bournemouth succeeded in another pushover try, unconverted the half-time score was 20-5.

Bournemouth kicked off the second half, but Bracknell scored almost immediately, the home side knocked on and from the scrum, two phases later with the ball loose, Noah Cannon kicked on down the wing and outsprinting the defence, scored, with the conversion by Olli Radford, the score was now 20-12.

Bracknell were in the ascendency, but unfortunately the wind had dropped so the advantage was not as great as the first half. Bournemouth scored next though and their final points of the game, after a penalty was awarded for an unfortunate high tackle, this took the score to 23-12 after 18 minutes of the half.

Bracknell were much improved now and closed the gap again with more good play by Cannon on the wing, following an interchange of passes Bracknell scored a fine try on the left wing, with the conversion successful the score now 23-17.

As the match was drawing to a close and the home side in site of a win, it seemed they were intent on retaining the ball than denying Bracknell the bonus point. Bournemouth had a good spell retaining the ball, including not using a 3 man overlap which probably would have resulted in a score.

With minutes remaining and looking for the win, Bracknell retained the ball. The final play loomed, Bracknell had a line-out on the halfway line, looking to score, line-out ball secured, the final whistle was blown after a forward pass, the unforced error bringing an end to the match, much to the disappointment of the away fans, an unlikely victory had been on the cards.

Final score Bournemouth 23 (4pts) Bracknell 17 (1pt)
