A Sunday to remember

Exactly 100 Years since the end the Great War, the newly formed Bracknell RFC’s Under 13’s Girls Team took to fields of Devils Island, North Wall Park, the home of Winchester Rugby Club as participants in the first instalment of the RFU Area 2 Waterfall Series.

After an immaculately observed 2 minutes silence in commemoration of the brave persons who have afforded them their opportunity to represent Bracknell RFC, our own U13 Girls began their rugby journeys and prepared for their own personal battles on the pitch. Joining with Ellingham and Ringwood RFC to complete our team meant our opponents would include a join team of Trojans RFC & Rams RFC, Winchester RFC & Alton RFC, Havant RFC and Basingstoke RFC.

The games, played across 2 pitches, came thick and fast. And our players did not disappoint. From the outset Isabelle Millard took a great catch and drove hard into a well drilled Winchester defence. Good recycling lead to a darting run from Malene Bowden-Evans, who off loaded to Naia Friday to continue the momentum up towards the try line. The move was finished off by one of our E&R team mates. This seemed to somewhat aggravate a very capable Winchester Team who were now keen to test out our girls defensive skills. Some great solo tackles and double tackles by our combined team seemed to come as a surprise to an experience Winchester team. When the final whistle blew, a narrow victory of 2 tries to 1 for Winchester RFC was recorded. What couldn’t be counted were the smiles and sheer enjoyment written all over the Bracknell players faces. After only one match, there were tales, anecdotes and memories made.

Another 4 games were to follow and it wouldn’t be long before the girls tasted success. In there 4th game against Havant/Trojans new targets were set. The Players started to show their skills and excellent support play. Layla Chambers (new to the team), gathered a floating pass under pressure and having made ground, off-loaded to Isabelle Millard, who with a back ground in Cross Country Athletics, set off from deep in her own half hugging the touchline. Isabelle was brought down some 5 metres from the try line, the ball was recycled through a couple rucks for Isabelle to regain possession and smash through (or should I say over) the remaining defender to score a memorable try. Excellent stuff!

Our last game of the day saw us come up against one of the longest established and best resourced girls teams from Hampshire - Basingstoke RFC. But in the face of adversity comes tenacity and determination. Maybe it was the oppositions over confidence, their ill discipline or our girls “Inner Warrior” mentality. But a narrow 3-2 defeat exemplified the team’s resilience and certainly earned the respect of their opponents.

Our next outing should be at the 2nd Leg of the RFU Area 2 Waterfall Series at Reading RFC in December. For more information about Girls Rugby at Bracknell RFC please visit www.bracknellrugbyclub.com and look us up, or email: Girls@bracknellrugbyclub.com
